In this study, recent overseas childcare policies, systems, and curricula in 12 OECD member countries were examined.Additionally, parents’involvement in these policies, systems, and curricula were reviewed. The results show that not only cultural backgrounds but also economic and demographic factors commonly influence childcare policies.Furthermore, although there are variations in countries’childcare systems, early childhood education and care are generally provided for children aged 0 to 5 years old.Curricula are similar to curricula used for educating and caring for children aged 0 to 5 years in Japan. In addition, parental involvement in early childhood education and care is active or obligatory in many countries, which is significantly different from Japan’s situation. In light of the above,it is necessary to consider the historical background when introducing the concept of early childhood education and care in another country.Determining if parental involvement is voluntary or obligatory in each country is also important. It is expected that Japan will move in this direction in the future.
